Wanna Work In The Supplement Industry?

November 25, 2008

A company called NutraNutra has just launched an employment website, designed to allow employees and employers post jobs and resumes. If you love the supplement industry and consider yourself to be a supplement genius in your own right, then you may want to consider a career in this field. A career in the supplement industry is extremely lucrative and lots of fun along the way if you’re with the right company.  Stick with the companies that have established themselves in the industry and have the research and quality control in place to deliver safe and effective products. Supplement companies love hiring people that live the lifestyle.

As Robert Kennedy (publisher of MuscleMag International) told me many years ago when I worked for him “If you can make a living from your hobby, you’ll never work a day in your life.”

RIVALUS Releases HELIX-24

November 25, 2008

An up-and-coming Canadian company called “RIVALUS” has been making lots of noise on the Canadian supplement scene this past year.  Their product formulas are very impressive and so they should be as they’re designed by renowned exercise physiology expert Dr. Darren Burke who owns the company.  I’ve known Darren for many years now and he’s a great guy that’s extremely knowledgeable in the area of supplement formulations.  His newest product “Helix-24″ is described on their website as a clinically tested GH and IGF-1 booster that also “triggers genetic changes in skeletel muscle“.  It’s set to hit stores any week now.

Chief Scientific Advisor, Dr. Candow comments: “We have created a new type of supplement using the latest technology in the fields of organic and gene science.”

What’s In Helix-24?

The company hasn’t released their formula yet but my best guess is that the main component in this supplement responsible for increasing GH and IGF-1 is creatine. New research was posted on their website 3 months prior to the product launch, and this research shows that Creatine increases these two anabolic hormones.  I’m sure they’ve also added other substances that help boost GH and IGF-1 levels.  It’s also likely to be in a time-released formula (hence the “24″ part of the product name.)  This is just a hunch but time will tell if The Supplement Genius was correct!

Calcium Plus Magnesium Help Fight Cancer

November 25, 2008

If you’re like most of us, you take a “multi” every day because you know it’s got all the good stuff you need to stay healthy. Vitamins and minerals are micronutrients that allow all the biochemical reactions to take place in your body. Two micronutrients you will want to pay attention to are Calcium and Magnesium because they may have cancer-fighting properties when taken correctly. Researchers have now discovered that it’s not the amount of each nutrient consumed that’s most important, but rather the amount of each relative to each other. According to the study, when the ratios of the two micronutrients were nearly equal to each other the reemergence of cancer was reduced by 33 percent!

Americans already have relatively high calcium levels, but it was observed that calcium treatments alone did not necessarily lead to lower incidences of the disease.

“These results mean that designing a personalized diet/supplementation regimen that takes the ratio of both nutrients [calcium and magnesium] into account may be better than supplementing with only one or the other alone,” said Dr. Qi Dai, a member of the research team which presented the results.

Optimum Signs Tobias Young

November 25, 2008

Supplement giant Optimum Nutrition has signed NPC Bodybuilder Tobias Young, who placed 2nd in the Heavyweight Class at last month’s NPC San Francisco Bodybuilding & Figure Championships. Tobias has a "pretty" physique at 5-feet, 11-inches and 235 pounds but I’ll bet a hundred kilos of Creatine that he won’t ever win the Olympia! I think this is a great move for Tobias because Optimum has deep pockets especially since being acquired by Glanbia, but I’m not sure what it’s really going to do for the Optimum brand? Optimum is one of the top companies in the industry and as such should only align themselves with champions of the same caliber as their products. Nike, Gatorade, Reebok, Powerade and Starter would never sign a no name athlete and attach their ad campaign to them, so why is Optimum doing this? Do you think this was a good athlete to sign? Add your opinion in the comments section below.

Del-Immune V Boosts Immune System

November 25, 2008

A recent study on Soviet-developed immune formula Del-Immune V shows the product has a significant effect on immune function. The study demonstrated that daily administration of Del-Immune V within 5 days raised a level of circulating interferon. Interferons are the body’s switches that help cells resist viral infection and provide the initial, crucial response to immune challenges. The results of this research demonstrate the immune modulator activity of Del-Immune V and the potential value the dietary supplement may have in clinical situations. These findings were presented at the EUPROBIO 2008 Conference in Poland. The product is now manufactured in the U.S. by Vivolac Laboratories of Indianapolis, Indiana.

Do Myostatin Blocking Supplements Work?

November 18, 2008

Myostatin blocking supplements like Cystoseira Canariensis (a.k.a. Brown Seaweed) have been marketed with claims that it binds to myostatin genes and inhibits its role as a regulator of muscle mass. But top research scientist Dr. Darryn Willoughby at Baylor University examined 12 weeks of supplementation with Cystoseira Canariensis on myostatin, strength and muscle mass.  Subjects were given 1,200 mg per day and trained 3 times per week. The results indicated that the myostatin blocker had no effect on blood myostation, muscle or strength!

According to Dr. Willoughby, “We can only conclude that at the recommended dosage of cystoseira canariensis the myostatin-binding supplement used in this study is ineffective at preferentially increasing muscle strength and mass and decreasing fat mass.”

In a recent interview with Michael Zumpano on No Bull Radio (an awesome podcast show worth listening to every week), Michael stated that the first supplements that could actually inhibit Myostatin are many years away.  Michael is the former owner of Champion Nutrition, the co-author of the original Underground Steroid Handbook and is defintely one of the most knowledgeable experts in the supplement industry.

Interactive Coming To Europe

November 18, 2008

Canadian supplement company “Interactive Nutrition” has been making some waves lately with a fresh new look for their packaging and several new products. But big news hit the “supplement scene” Monday when they announced a massive European distribution deal. It turns out that they’ve signed a 5 year contract for distributing their product line throughout Europe. The distribution company they’ve partnered up for this deal is called “Sigurdur Arnason” and the contract calls for minimum purchases of $6,000,000 in product for 2009, increasing annually up to $15,000,000 in 2013.  Since Interactive manufacturers their own supplements, this should result in healthy profits for their company. Being a Canadian myself and growing up around Interactive Nutrition’s supplements, it’s nice to see yet another Canadian company getting props overseas.
