Protein Bars Damage Teeth
September 30, 2009
While nutritional bars may appear to be good for one’s health, some dental care experts are revealing that these snacks can create a nesting ground for cavities to form in a person’s mouth. Dr Richard Price, consumer advisor for the American Dental Association, recently told MSNBC.com that people who eat protein bars on a regular basis may be at a higher risk of developing tooth decay.
“It’s the consistency of these bars,” Price said. “They’re sticky and when something is sticky it stays in the mouth longer and the longer it stays in the mouth, the more time bacteria have to work on it. That creates an environment that’s not healthy for teeth.”
Tooth decay occurs when foods containing carbohydrates are left on the teeth. Nutritional bars are one such food and because people usually eat them on-the-go, the seemingly healthy snack has the potential to wreak havoc on one’s dental health. To avoid developing cavities, the American Dental Association recommends brushing twice a day, flossing daily, eating a balanced diet and visiting your dentist regularly to maintain optimal dental health.

MuscleMeds Class Action Lawsuit
September 30, 2009
Love him or hate him, you’ve gotta hand it to steroid expert Anthony Roberts (picture on the left), he’s always got the inside scoop when it comes to the underground anabolic scene! According to Roberts, a lawyer named Scott J. Ferrell of the law firm Call Jensen & Ferrell is representing tw
o California men and others in a class action lawsuit against champion bodybuilder Gerard Dente’s MuscleMeds supplement company. The particular product they’re going after him on is their “ARIMATEST” product (pictured to the right). The lawsuit seeks millions of dollars in damages based on MuscleMed’s alleged violation of the California Legal Remedies Act, unjust enrichment, fraud, violation of the California business and protections code, and breach of warranty.
What’s In ARIMATEST?
The main ingredient in ARIMATEST is a steroid called “1,4,6-Androstatrien-3,17-dione” which is a prohormone also know as “ATD”. This is technically an aromatase inhibitor which boosts testosterone by reducing estrogen formation.
So What’s MuscleMeds Being Sued For?
The lawsuit says that the people behind MuscleMeds make false advertising claims about ARIMATEST and that the product creates a false result when tested. MuscleMeds claims that ARIMATEST boosts testosterone much more than competitors’ products, according to the lawsuit. In fact, MuscleMeds actually claims that ARIMATEST will boost testosterone levels by 10,000%. However, the plaintiffs claim that the product does NOT boost actual, bonded testosterone by 10,000%.
Does ARIMATEST Boost Testosterone By 10,000 Percent?
Well not according to ZRT Laboratories, which is the lab cited as the source of research supporting the 10,000% claim in the ARIMATEST ads! In fact, ZRT Laboratories states that they demanded that MuscleMeds stop using the lab’s name in its advertising on 2 separate occasions. In a declaration filed in U.S. District Court on May 4, ZRT marketing director Steve Forsyth wrote:
“ZRT did not conduct any research according to scientific methods that would support the research findings being attributed to ZRT by the manufacturer of Arimatest.” Forsyth also said that, in January, he “also had serious doubts about the accuracy of the scientific assertions and representations contained in Arimatest advertising.”
According to the MuscleMeds website (as of this writing), they still claim the product increases testosterone by 10,000 percent!

David Vobora Fails Drug Test
September 30, 2009
St. Louis Rams linebacker David Vobora has been suspended for 4 games after testing positive for a banned substance. The NFL said David Vobora had violated the league’s policy on performance-enhancing substances. Marc Lillibridge (Vobora’s agent) told NFL.com that his client had failed a doping test after taking a supplement tainted with the banned substance. Lillibridge said that they are planning to sue the company that made the supplement and that a toxicology report showed the product had been tainted. It was unclear what the substance was and when Vobora failed the doping test.

Anabolic Xtreme In Trouble
September 30, 2009
According to steroid expert Anthony Roberts, Anabolic Xtreme’s entire product line has been pulled off Bodybuilding.com. This is bad news when you consider that bodybuilding.com is the largest online retailer of supplements in the world! It’s also bad news when you consider that Anabolic Xtreme does a huge majority of their business online. This is likely linked to the recent event of Bodybuilding.com being raided by the FDA. Some of Anabolic Xtreme’s products tested positive for an illegal anabolic steroid, and another being confirmed to contain an illegal stimulant. According to Anthony Roberts, Chaparral Labs is also another company who was named by the federal government in the Bodybuilding.com raid who also seems to have no more products for sale on the site.

New GNC Store Design
September 30, 2009
GNC is unveiling a revolutionary new retail experience that will serve as the company’s prototype for the future. The store seeks to transform the brand into the premier health and wellness resource for the entire family. Consumers will experience an entirely new retail environment, including new product categories, a wider array of offerings and a new, modern design. Earlier this month, GNC opened the first concept store for this new retail environment in Pittsburgh, the company’s headquarter city, and plans to roll it out in other locations throughout the United States. GNC’s new 3,000 square-foot location, is a one-stop shopping experience for consumers seeking not only innovative, high-quality fitness and nutritional supplements, but also natural, alternative treatments for holistic wellness. The new store offers nearly triple the number of products available in today’s GNC stores, with 1,000 new items. It features a comprehensive portfolio of health, wellbeing and sports nutrition products - under GNC’s proprietary brands and other best brands in the category - as well as expanded product offerings in the categories of natural health and healing, probiotics, cleansing, proteins and health and beauty.
GNC’s new store is divided into 4 individual sections that showcase distinct product categories.
- The front space underscores GNC’s increased emphasis on healthy lifestyle management and provides customers with tools to address health, diet and overall wellbeing in a thoughtful, holistic manner. Consumers will find products focused on cleansing and detoxifying, weight management nutrition, fit and active accessories and women’s wellness, as well as new categories such as yoga, expanded proteins, meal replacements and portion control. This space also features GNC’s newest innovative line: GNC WELLbeING. Launched in May, it is the first and only comprehensive, one-source line of whole body health products created exclusively for fit and active women, targeting whole body nutrition, fitness nutrition and therapeutic body care.
- The second space is the store’s vitamin headquarters. Here, GNC offers a premier assortment of both preventative and condition-specific products for women, men, children — and even the family pet - that address heart health, mood, sleep, diabetes, digestion and more. Consumers will find not only core GNC brands but also a significantly enhanced offering of best in class brands, including Dr. Weil, Pomology and Natural Factors. This section also showcases new health and beauty offerings, including high-performance skincare products for cellulite, stretch marks and teeth whitening, and an enhanced array of natural health and healing products, such as herbals and homeopathic remedies.
- The back two rooms are designed for GNC’s avid fitness and sports enthusiasts, with greatly expanded product assortments that take the category beyond the body builder. One distinct space targets sports, fitness and hardcore diet consumers with proteins, thermogenics, fitness accessories, nutritional bars, endurance products and drinks.
- The other space is designed for the hardcore body building customer, with an assortment that includes niche designer formulated brands positioned to appeal uniquely to that consumer. The two fitness sections also carry a new assortment of accessories, including books, scales, and blood pressure monitors.
When Looking For The Best Results, Hire A Design Agency
GNC did just this by hiring retail design guru Peter Arnell and his firm Arnell to develop a retail design that spotlights GNC’s leadership position and expertise in the health, nutrition and fitness category, while engaging a wider variety of consumers, both core and new customers. The new configuration represents a more efficient use of wall and floor space to offer the customer a clearer vision and greater sight lines. The noticeably new contemporary retail environment provides an enhanced showcase for GNC’s product offerings while simplifying store navigation, making it easy for consumers to find specific products to meet their needs. Arnell has designed similar significant retail projects, including the RBK flagship store for Reebok, DKNY store-in-store retail boutiques, Jacob & Co. Jewelers’ flagship store in Manhattan and Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep showrooms.

Lee Priest Signs With Infinite Labs
September 24, 2009
Infinite Labs the (creators of Juggernaut) are trying to make a splash by revamping their company. The first big change is new ownership. April Jacobs is now the company President.
“I helped launch Infinite Labs almost two years ago, so I feel very connected to it”, Claimed Mrs. Jacobs, who is now the only woman to own and operate a Hardcore Sports Nutrition Company. Mrs. Jacobs states firmly, “There is no reason Infinite Labs cannot become the next big company, especially with the changes going in affect”.
Infinite Labs Signs Lee Priest
One of the most interesting changes is the signing of Lee Priest, who currently resides in Australia. Now Lee is very well known for his massive physique, his ripped conditioning and his loyalty to the fans! But in the supplement industry on the business side, he’s well know for the number of companies he’s been sponsored by over the past 10 years. This guy indeed gets around!
Companies like:
- Twinlab (click HERE to see)
- Prolab (click HERE to see)
- Cutting Edge Labs (click HERE to see)
- Body Ripped (click HERE to see)
- Powertec (click HERE to see)
And at least one other supplement company have all given Lee Priest a shot but the relationship seems to go sour in the end with nearly all of them. He was also thrown out of the IFBB just a few years back.
When asked about the decision to make Lee a part of the Infinite Team, Mrs. Jacobs simply replied:
“Why not? I have never been afraid of a challenge. Lee is an incredible athlete, who has a strong fan base. He was deemed an underdog in the past, just as I am currently. It is a perfect fit”.
Adding Lee to their team is only one of many changes with this company. Supposedly they’re opening new offices in Orlando Florida, overhauling their website, hiring a sales force, and launching 6 new products. Mrs. Jacobs proudly states “I consider this the Infinite Dream Team. We feel we bring something refreshing to the Sports Nutrition Industry, a Hardcore Company, with a touch of Class”.
Do you think this was a good sign for Infinity Labs? Please post your comments below.

FenuLife® Galactomannan Reduces Hunger
September 23, 2009
FenuLife is a unique galactomannan ingredient manufactured from fenugreek and contains more than 75% soluble fiber. Because of its molecular structure, FenuLife supposedly resists enzymatic degradation in the digestive system which allows it to be more active in your body. FenuLife is known to improve blood glucose response.
Appetite Control Study
A recent study tested the effect of 4 g or 8 g of FenuLife galactomannan versus placebo in 18 obese subjects. Following dosage of FenuLife or placebo in a beverage alongside a standardized breakfast, every 30 minutes for 3.5 hours subjects rated their feelings of hunger. Samples of blood for analysis of blood glucose and insulin response also were taken. Subjects were then given an unlimited lunch buffet and recorded food intake for the rest of the day. A statistically significant increase was shown in measurements of satiety and fullness, with reduced ratings of hunger and prospective food consumption at 8 g. In addition, this dosage showed a trend towards reduced caloric intake at lunch. The researchers concluded that 8 g dosage may have short-term beneficial effects in obese subjects.
“FenuLife can be an effective ingredient in weight management formulations,” says Jocelyn Mathern, R.D., the study’s principal investigator and now the Technical Manager for Frutarom Health USA. “Scientific literature points to many benefits of dietary fiber for weight management and this study has shown that FenuLife can have a significant positive effect in increasing feelings of fullness and reducing hunger.” “These promising study results help position FenuLife as an innovative ingredient for weight management,” says David Hart, the Product Manager at Frutarom. “In recent months, four additional clinical trials using our LifeLine ingredients have been completed or published.”

Prostate Supplements Pass Testing
September 22, 2009
Prostate Cancers
According to the National Institutes of Health, more than half of men in their 60s and as many as 90% in their 70s and 80s have some symptoms of enlarged prostate, also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). These symptoms include frequent urination, difficulty in starting urination, and fullness in the bladder after urination. U.S. sales of saw palmetto supplements were $125 million in 2007 according to Nutrition Business Journal.
Prostate Supplements
Saw palmetto remains one of the most popular herbal supplements due to its ability to improve urinary symptoms in men with prostate enlargement. Beta-sitosterol is also beneficial in some people. ConsumerLab.com did lab testing and found most supplements to provide their claimed amounts of saw palmetto or beta-sitosterol and to meet other quality measures. One supplement appeared to contain none of its claimed saw palmetto; one provided only 69% of its beta-sitosterol, and two saw palmetto products failed FDA labeling requirements by not indicating the part of the plant used.

Supreme Protein Powder
September 22, 2009
By: Scott Welch BASc (Nutrition), CAAP (Advertising)
Springing out of their protein bar recall this past spring, the makers of the wildly popular Supreme Protein bar have now released a new powdered version of this product. Each serving will contain 30 g of protein, a full spectrum of vitamins and minerals, and healthy fats including flax seed oil. From what I’m told, the powder will come in 3 flavors (chocolate, vanilla and a natural version). Of course, they claim that it’s the best tasting etc. etc. but they’re also claiming that the product is “Clinically proven to promote dramatic results in major clinical trials“. Will this new product live up to the huge success of their protein bar? If the price is low and the taste is as good as they claim, they might have a chance. Only time will tell.
