Testofen Increases Libido
October 27, 2009
By: Scott Welch BASc (Nutrition), CAAP (Advertising)
A new human clinical study was recently completed in Australia on the well known testosterone-boosting herb “Testofen” which is licensed to supplement companies by Gencor Pacific. Testofen is a proprietary extract of fenugreek. This study evaluated its effect on libido in healthy males. The randomized, double blind, placebo-study tested sexual function, performance and libido levels in 60 healthy males aged between 21 and 50 years during a six week period. Results showed Testofen produced a significant positive change in all parameters of libido, including sexual cognition, sexual arousal, sexual experience and orgasm. Scientists speculate that the effect may be a result of interaction with testosterone via alpha-5 reductase activity. Fusion Bodybuilding’s “ZEUS” product, All Max Nutrition’s “TESTO Fx Hardcore” and Isatori’s “ISA-TEST” products contain Gencor Pacific’s clinically proven Testofen ingredient.

Calcium Gum
October 26, 2009

By: Scott Welch BASc (Nutrition), CAAP (Advertising)
Calcium is needed for healthy bones, teeth and the heart. Wrigley is now planning to sell a calcium-fortified gum In New Zealand! Each serving of gum - two pellets or one stick - will deliver up to 200mg of calcium. Calcium-fortified gum can be bought from dentists in New Zealand and Wrigley sells it in the United States and Britain. Staff in Sydney said yesterday they could not say when the company would have a product for release in Australia or New Zealand. Wrigley maintains chewing sugar-free gum fortified with calcium may be good for dental health. The agency dismissed the concerns of Victoria’s Department of Human Services that permitting the scheme may set a precedent to fortify candies and soft drinks (too late!). Food Standards said chewing gum containing minimal residual sugars differed from other foods of little or no nutritional value like sweets or soft drinks, since chewing the gum after meals was good for oral health and was recommended by dentists.
What’s The Medical Community Think Of Gum Fortified WIth Calcium
The Dental Association’s associate director, Dr Graeme Ting, said chewing sugar-free gum with added calcium would improve oral health. But university professor of medicine and endocrinology, Ian Reid, said he was “neutral” about the gum, because his research group had found an increased rate of heart attacks in women who took calcium supplements! Although it was a modest dose, users would have to limit consumption so as not to exceed the daily intake. He encouraged people to get calcium from food as it was absorbed more slowly than the supplemental form. Recommended intakes vary by age. Adults are recommended to consume 1,000 mg a day, rising to 1,300 mg for elderly men and women over 50 - but no more than 2,500 mg.

Pure Pro 50
October 26, 2009
By: Scott Welch BASc (Nutrition), CAAP (Advertising)
ABB has now released their protein RTD called “Pure Pro 50″ The most striking thing about this product is the cool container it comes in - a strong resealable aluminum bottle! The resealable aluminum bottles are much more expensive to make than the traditional plastic RTDs but this keeps your protein cooler longer. Each serving is packed with 50 grams of protein from a blend of milk and whey and each contains anywhere from 3 to 4 grams of sugar and 2 to 4 grams o fat (depending on the flavor). I have not tried the product (yet) but since ABB is owned by Glanbia (which is one of the largest protein manufacturers in the world) it’s I’m sure they did a good job.

People Still Buying Supplements Despite Tough Economy
October 26, 2009
Despite the terrible economy, 65% of adults (up slightly from 1% last year) take supplements, according to a new survey conducted by Ipsos-Public Affairs. When asked if the economy had impacted their household’s dietary supplement purchasing habits, nearly three-quarters (74%) of those surveyed responded that it had not.
“We’re pleased that consumers continue to place emphasis on their health, even in uncertain economic times, and that dietary supplements continue to play a role in their overall wellness regimen,” said Judy Blatman. “According to our survey, consumers, including supplement users, report to be taking necessary steps towards good health, such as trying to eat a balanced diet and getting regular exercise. We’re encouraged that dietary supplements continue to be a part of that equation for many.”
According to results from the 2009 survey, the economy prompted 27% of dietary supplement consumers to alter their supplement purchasing habits. Among that group, purchasing habits changed in the following ways:
- 59% (of the 27%) reported they are purchasing fewer supplements as a means to save money.
- 31% (of the 27%) indicated they are now purchasing less expensive brands.
- 26% (of the 27%) said they have been purchasing store brand supplements.
- 23% (of the 27%) indicated they rely on coupons and other value-added promotions.
- 22% (of the 27%) responded they only buy supplements when they are on sale.
- 5% (of the 27%) responded they are purchasing more supplements to maintain health.
- 4% (of the 27%) responded they have stopped purchasing supplements because of the economy.
Supplement consumers indicated that the three factors most important to them when purchasing supplements are: the price, the supplements facts box (i.e. dosage, daily value, etc.) and the label claims (e.g., maintain heart health, maintain joint health, etc). The 2009 CRN Consumer Survey on Dietary Supplements was was conducted online and included a national sample of 2,043 adults aged 18 and older. The survey has been conducted annually since 2000.

FUSION BODYBUILDING Launches OMEGA•OIL™
October 22, 2009

By: Scott Welch BASc (Nutrition), CAAP (Advertising)
Canadian supplement company Fusion Bodybuilding is throwing their hat in the EFA ring by launching their own essential fatty acid supplement. Like all Fusion products though, this one’s designed with the bodybuilder in mind. OMEGA•OIL has been developed to help prevent muscle loss, reduce inflammation, improve insulin sensitivity, improve blood lipid levels, improve mood and promote healthy brain cell growth. OMEGA•OIL uses an exclusive “3-fish blend” as they call it which is made of Sardines, Mackerel, and Salmon Body Oil. The formula is designed to trigger rapid increases in various eicosanoids found in blood.
“It’s
about results and about staying healthy,” says Jeff Wilde (in picture on right), one of the developers of the product. “We here at FUSION BODYBUILDING created OMEGA•OIL because we knew how important EFAs were for bodybuilders, and we also know that most bodybuilders aren’t getting enough in their protein-heavy, low-fat diets. We wanted to give bodybuilders an omega-3 supplement made just for them so it could help them stay healthy and reach their goals. OMEGA•OIL has surpassed our expectations, and I’m sure it’s going to surpass the expectations of serious bodybuilders too.”
How Does OMEGA•OIL Differ From Other EFA Supplements?
Well here’s what Chris Belanger of Fusion Bodybuilding explained:
“This particular product uses molecular distillation, which removes harmful substances like mercury and other harmful toxins. This process also creates a more potent product. A 1000 mg OMEGA-OIL Softgel yields 400 mg of EPA and 200mg of DHA, important components of an OMEGA-3 fish oil. As well, OMEGA-OIL uses wild cold water fish, not farmed.”

After climbing the MMA ladder, TJ made quite an impression in his UFC debut in April of 2009, as he won a three round split decision over MMA fighter Ryo Chonan. will be fighting in UFC 107 on December 12th, 2009 and says he’s been using their GP3, DRIVE and ALPHA products in his preperation for the fight.
