More Protein Bar Recalls

January 25, 2009

The protein bar recall is spreading more and more throughout North America. I even spoke with a supplement distributor in Europe Friday and he’s very concerned as they’ve been carrying peanut-flavored protein bars made in the U.S. for some time now. There are so many companies affected by this recall because many protein bars are made at only a few manufacturing plants.  If one of these plants bought their peanut paste or peanut products from the contaminated source, all the peanut flavored bars they make for companies could be contaminated!

More Contaminated Bars?

The following is an updated list of recalled protein bars but we expect this list to grow.  Check in with us every few days as we update the list.

  • Supreme Protein Bars
  • NutriSystem Inc. Peanut Butter Granola Bar, sold on its Web site but not in retail stores.

$1 Million In Supplements Donated For Flood Relief

September 16, 2008

A non-profit organization called "Nourish America " reached out to supplement companies to make a profound impact on the relief efforts for the Midwest Flooding Crisis .  They were able to donate more than $1 million of protein bars, healthy foods and snacks, body care products, vitamins and nutritional drinks!

Donors Included:

Donors sent truckloads of much-needed products to all parts of Iowa and Missouri. Products were very gratefully received.

“With over 5,000 people still displaced from their homes, basic issues such as food and housing are of paramount importance and the help from Nourish America has been instrumental in keeping people able to face the challenges ahead…” said Linda Langston, County Supervisor.

“We were delighted to support Nourish America’s efforts to provide desperately-needed, nutritious food to Iowa’s flood victims. It’s our hope that our donation of CLIF BARS provided not only essential nutrients to people and families left devastated by the flooding, but also some comfort during an extremely difficult time,” stated Thao Pham, Director of the Clif Bar Family Foundation.

“Nourish America’s successes reflect the good will and generosity of our supporters. We deeply appreciate each and every one of them. We are grateful that our work has been helpful to those in need,” said Michael Morton, Nourish America’s Executive Director.

Protein Bars Still Popular

September 3, 2008

Bars are targeted toward consumers’ unique needs, such as women’s health, energy bars, protein bars, cholesterol management, sports nutrition and kids’ bars. Currently the top-three selling “serious” sports bars are OhYeah! bars, Supreme Protein and the Myoplex bar is still hanging in there thanks to it’s mass-market distribution.  Jay Robb (pictured on right) is a low-carb diet expert with a great book called The Fat Burning Diet and several others that are very well written.  But If there is a diet expert out there that needs to be on be on the TV show “What Not To Wear” more than Jay Robb does, I don’t know who they are!  But Jay does know his stuff when it comes to weight loss and feels that the sales of bars are on the rise because of accessibility and health. Here’s what he has to say on the topic:

“Bars allow for a person to munch on something healthy, instead of reaching for a traditional candy bar or a caffeine-laced soda, coffee or energy drink.”

Veronica Bosgraaf, founder of PureBar  added,

“We are a busy society, but we are also becoming more aware of making purposeful choices in our lives, like with the foods we eat, the cars we drive, how we spend our valuable time, etc.”

And Rob Hurlbut, CEO, Attune Foods, agreed:

Consumers are increasingly looking for convenient, great tasting ways of staying healthy. Bars are a good fit for busy lifestyles because they fit in a purse, backpack or suitcase.”

How Big Is The Bar Category?

According to AIBOnline.org, the nutritional health bars total category sales in 2004 was more than $656 million. The Atkins bar lead, with more than $120 million in sales, and Clif Bar came in fourth, at almost $60 million in sales. Numbers were down in 2005 (52 weeks ending October 2005) with nutritional health bars total category sales at more than $529 million. Zone Perfect led the charts with almost $53 million in sales, and Clif LUNA followed at $34 million. A recent survey found that 67% of respondents said they’d eaten a weight management bar in the past 30 days, an average of 9.4 food bars over the 30-day period. Granola bars at 64%; cereal breakfast bars at 63%; and energy and performance bars at 58%.
