V-Pure - World’s First Algae-Sourced Omega-3s

September 23, 2008

A supplement manufacturing company called “Eau Plus” has developed the world’s first algae-sourced DHA/EPA organic ingredient and will soon launch it in bakery, dairy and pharmaceutical products. According to the company, their products “V-Pure“, stands out among other algae-sourced omega-3s, because unlike other products it contains both DHA and EPA.

“Previously only algal DHA was available and even then difficult to get hold of,” the company said. “The fact nutritionists can now recommend a sustainable sourced, pure plant-based product that contains both EPA and DHA is a huge leap forward for the health of everyone, and especially vegetarians, vegans, religious and ethical groups who avoid animal products for ethical and environmental reasons.”

Apparently V-Pure is Cheap, Tasteless and Odorless. Hmmm, this algae shit sounds just like my ex girlfriend (yes, that’s her and I in the picture on the left).

EFAs Protect Against Air Pollution

September 11, 2008

Essentially Fatty Acids (EFAs) have become extremely popular over the last 5 years and nearly everyone that’s serious about their physique takes them in a supplemental form.  EFAs have already been used widely as a preventative countermeasure for many serious disorders but new research indicates that they may also help defend against the effects of air pollution! EFA supplements have already been recommended to combat poor circulation, rheumatoid arthritis, heart disease, depression and anxiety, as well as showing potential benefits for sufferers of Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. After conducting a study in Mexico City, one of the most notoriously polluted major metropolises in the world, researchers have found that supplementation with Omega-3 fatty acids appears to protect the heart against the adverse effects of air-borne pollutants. A full article of the study from Environmental Health Perspectives can be viewed here

Supplements For Inmates?

September 9, 2008

A man escapes from a prison where he had been kept for 15 years. As he runs away, he finds a house and breaks into it, looking for money and guns, but only finds a young couple in bed. He orders the guy out of bed and ties him up in a chair. While tying the girl up to the bed, he gets on top of her, kisses her on the neck, then gets up, and goes to the bathroom.

While he’s in there, the husband tells his wife: ”Listen, this guy is an escaped prisoner, look at his clothes! He probably spent lots of time in jail, and hasn’t seen a woman in years. I saw how he kissed your neck. If he wants sex, don’t resist, don’t complain, just do what he tells you, just give him satisfaction. This guy must be dangerous, if he gets angry, he’ll kill us. Be strong, honey. I love you.”

To which the wife responds, ”He was not kissing my neck! He was whispering in my ear. He told me he was gay, thought you were cute, and asked if we kept any Vaseline in the bathroom. Be strong, honey, I love you, too.”

Supplements For Inmates?

Yes! I was speaking with U.K. based supplement researcher Mark Gilbert the other day and he told me about a study going on over there that will be testing out the effects of supplements on inmates behavior! Yes, United Kingdom young offenders’ institutes will be the testing grounds to see if adequate nutrition helps curb violent behavior. Researchers believe there is not enough emphasis on the nutritional needs of the brain - a key factor in governing behavior. If you’ve dieted down for a bodybuilding contest yourself or if you’ve been around someone who has, you’ll agree that low nutrient levels turn ordinary people into complete assholes!

Previous Research Supports Supplementation

A double-blind placebo-controlled study conducted in 2002 found evidence that giving vitaminmineral and Essential Fatty Acid (EFA) supplements to young adult prisoners (aged 18 to 21 years) considerably reduced antisocial behaviour including violence. Published in the British Journal of Psychiatry, the study concluded that the implications were similar for those eating poor diets in the community.

Free Supplements While Doing Time?

This study comes at a particularly pertinent time when U.K. prisons are full and the government is lookingfor ways to reduce the inmate population and to cut down on the amount of sexual favors inmates are doing just for a can of Animal Paks! This trial will use male prisoners aged 16 to 21 who will take daily supplements of vitaminmineral and Essential Fatty Acids or placebos for a 4-month period. Their behavior before and after will be monitored by the jail guards (ya, jail guards!).  The Prison Service said the study has the potential to add to policy on behaviour management. A spokesperson said: ”We hope the study will shed further light on the possible links between nutrition and behavior among young people.

EFAs Improve Insulin Sensitivity & Decrease Inflammation But Don’t Increase Testosterone

August 19, 2008

A study conducted by a team from Kronos Longevity Research Institute found a diet high in Omega-3 fatty acids improves insulin sensitivity and reduces inflammatory markers, but does not alter endocrine (hormone) responsiveness in older adults.

Method: Researchers recruited 6 dudes and 6 women over age 60 for the study; they consumed an isocaloric control diet (that is 33% carb, 33% protein, and 33% fat) for 6 weeks (to get all subjects to the same starting point), followed by an 8 experimental diet that included 720 grams per week of fatty fish plus 15 ml/d sardine oil. YUK!

“It is possible to achieve significant changes in the fat molecules in cell membranes after relatively short periods of changes in one’s diet,” said Panayiotis D. Tsitouras, M.D., the primary researcher on the trial. “We wanted to see if we could improve mental function, hormone levels at rest and/or under stress, and immune function, toward a pattern more like that of younger individuals.

Results showed consuming the diet high in omega-3s significantly improved insulin sensitivity, reduced triglycerides in women and reduced free fatty acids in men. Serum C-Reactive Protein (CRP), a marker of inflammation, was also reduced. Cellular inflammation is a sign that the body is in a stressed state which reduces overall health and decreases muscle mass.  No changes were found in metabolic parameters or hormone responses which may upset some for the supplement companies that are ripping people off by claiming EFAs increase testosterone.
